Harry Backhouse
Young Voices
Harry studied Economics at Nottingham University, and graduated in 2022 with a First Class degree. Due to his interest in economics, he interned at the UN Economic Commission for Europe as an Economic Affairs Intern. Whilst there, he came across the work of Marian Tupy from the Cato Institute, and the work of HumanProgress.org. He was inspired to work in the progress movement, charting how the world has gotten better throughout history economically, politically and socially.
He started writing on LinkedIn, studying ‘time-prices’, the concept developed by Marian Tupy, to show how most commodities in the UK had gotten cheaper over time. From the full English Breakfast to a cup of tea, workers in the UK could afford far more than what they used to. Harry was also able to get in touch with Marian Tupy, and in Summer 2023, Harry interned for him at the Cato Institute, where he was able to write about progress, and how liberalism has contributed to ensuring it.
He will be starting work as an Economist in January 2024 for the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, and would love to keep writing on the side in defence of liberty and progress.
